Up for grabs are 8.8 million votes that went to the three losing candidates, conservative Patricia Bull, moderate Peronist governor Juan Schiaretti and leftist Myriam Bregman. Reuters GraphicsSchiaretti and Bregman, both left-leaning, in theory should shed most of their combined 2.5 million votes to Massa in the Nov. 19 head-to-head. Bullrich's 6.3 million would likely favor Milei more, but moderates in her coalition could shift to Massa. Centrist Buenos Aires city mayor Horacio Larreta lost the conservative Together for Change's internal primary to Bullrich, but did get nearly 2.7 million votes, many of which shifted to her. Luana Molenberg, a 20-year-old worker in Buenos Aires, said she hoped the anti-Milei vote would get behind Massa: "I'm very afraid that Milei will win."

MELBOURNE, Aug 2 (Reuters) - A courageous Jamaica held Brazil to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday to reach the knockout phase for the first time in only their second Women's World Cup while condemning the South Americans to their earliest exit since 1995. Jamaica rode their luck to halftime and Brazil's desperation grew after the break as their attacks came to nothing. In search of a goal, the Brazilians exposed themselves to the counter-attack and Khadija Shaw all but made them pay. Brazil had one last chance in a final-minute goal-mouth scramble but Debinha headed straight to the keeper, allowing the Jamaicans to celebrate arguably their finest moment in international football. ADELAIDE, July 24 (Reuters) - Ary Borges scored a hat-trick on her Women's World Cup debut to help Brazil thrash debutants Panama 4-0 at the Hindmarsh stadium in Adelaide on Monday and get their campaign off to a winning start. Brazil, whose best finish at the global soccer showpiece was runners-up in 2007, have now won all nine of their opening Women's World Cup matches. Borges netted her second of the match 20 minutes later as she poked in a rebound after having a header saved by Bailey. Marta enjoyed a lively cameo, registering an effort on target with a free-kick, but the forward was unable to add a record-extending 18th World Cup goal to her tally. Brazil next face France in a mouth-watering clash on Saturday in Brisbane, while Panama take on Jamaica in Perth later that day.

"Inflation expectations are still very high," Campos Neto told a seminar hosted by newspaper Folha de S.Paulo on Monday, highlighting elevated long-term forecasts as particularly problematic. "Long-term forecasts remained little changed," the central bank chief said. "And we have a problem that are long-term inflation expectations persistently stuck around 4%". In the minutes of its May meeting, the central bank expressed concerns about inflation expectations, saying it continued "to assess that de-anchored expectations raise the cost of bringing inflation back to the target". Campos Neto acknowledged that headline inflation has been slowing down in Brazil, but noted that the core index remains "high" and "well above target".

BRASILIA, April 3 (Reuters) - Brazil will soon unveil tax measures, including a crackdown targeting Asian e-commerce giants and curbs on some company tax benefits, as it looks to raise more than 100 billion reais ($20 billion), Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said on Monday. The e-commerce measures come in response to complaints from local retailers about unfair competition from Asian giants such as AliExpress, Shein, and Shopee. He later told journalists that combating the practice, which Haddad called "smuggling", should generate 7 billion reais to 8 billion reais in new revenue for the government. The most significant impact will come from the government's move to seek approval from the Federal Supreme Court to disallow companies from receiving tax breaks from states on operating expenses, which result in them paying less federal tax. The tax reform proposal should be voted in the Lower House by July and in the Senate by October, Haddad said.
The new framework is considered crucial to addressing fiscal concerns after Lula secured congressional approval for a multi-billion-real package that bypasses the constitutional spending cap to boost social spending and fulfill campaign promises. However, in an interview with local news website Brasil 247, Lula said it wouldn't make sense to announce the fiscal framework and then travel to China. Reacting to the postponement, interest rate futures closed higher at the short end of the yield curve. During the interview, Lula also criticized the country's central bank, saying that an interest rate of 13.75% - its current level - is "irresponsible," adding he will continue to fight the current level to stimulate the economy. Brazil's central bank has been holding its benchmark interest rate at a six-year high since September and, according to economists polled by Reuters, is expected to maintain it unchanged at the Wednesday meeting.

The Sundance Film Festival has long been known for premiering some of the most original — and ultimately the most award-winning — indie titles of the year. As the most notable international film festivals increasingly feature queer titles in their lineups, it’s no surprise that much of the exciting content premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival comes from LGBTQ filmmakers or features queer themes. The Premieres sectionAs usual, many of the year’s most high-profile films, including those from queer creators and featuring queer storylines, are coming out of the festival’s Premieres section. Courtesy of Sundance InstituteEnglert’s film will screen in the world cinema dramatic section alongside queer films “Girl,” from U.K. filmmaker Adura Onashile, and “Mamacruz,” from Spanish director Patricia Ortega. The list of LGBTQ creators and titles doesn’t end there, making this perhaps the most significant Sundance Film Festival for queer cinema yet.
SAO PAULO, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Brazil's currency on Monday weakened roughly 1% against the dollar in early spot trading after supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country's capital a day earlier. Future contracts for the Bovespa benchmark stock index were down more than 1%, with the Sao Paulo stock market set to open at 10 a.m. (1300 GMT). (.BVSP)"Considering the enormous coverage the event got and the surprise we all had, markets should react negatively, but this should be short term," economists at JPMorgan said in a research note. "As day-to day government work resumes, attention should go back to the macro issues that have been top of mind." BRASILIA, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Brazil's incoming Finance Minister Fernando Haddad on Wednesday said fiscal expansion would not help the economy at the moment and the government needs to organize its finances to allow lower interest rates, tamping down fears of a public spending spree. His comments helped to calm market concerns about an explosion in public spending under leftist President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who takes office on Jan. 1. "There are situations that demand countercyclical actions ... but we are not at a moment when fiscal expansion will help the economy," he said in an television interview. Haddad said the only stimulus for Brazil's economy would come from the central bank cutting rates, but that would depend on signaling sustainability for public accounts. "If we signal that we have restructured public accounts in a sustainable way, it will be possible to bring interest rates" down, he said.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationLONDON, Nov 17 (Reuters) - The dollar rose on Thursday as investors digested mixed U.S. economic data, while the British pound fell as the UK government unveiled its latest budget update. Yet the dollar climbed on Thursday after U.S. retail sales data for October, released on Wednesday, came in stronger than expected. Traders will also scrutinise speeches from numerous Fed officials on Thursday for hints about rate hikes. It plunged 3.7% on Thursday last week when U.S. consumer inflation data for October came in lower than expected.
SAO PAULO, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Brazilian markets slumped on Thursday after the incoming administration of President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva proposed exempting some 175 billion reais ($32 billion) from the spending cap on next year's budget to pay for welfare programs. Lula's transition team late on Wednesday proposed to lawmakers guidelines for a constitutional amendment that would set a spending cap waiver to secure welfare programs, though without establishing how long the waiver would last. "The stock market will fall, the dollar will rise (against the real). The dollar doesn't rise and the stock market doesn't fall because of serious people, but because of those speculating every single day," he said. Helder Wakabayashi, an analyst at Toro Investimentos, said that markets would remain pressured at least until the incoming government proposes a deadline for the spending cap waiver.
REUTERS/Octavio JonesNEW YORK, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump's entry on Tuesday into the 2024 presidential race confirmed the world's "worst kept secret" and created another variable for markets that some investors say remains a low priority for now. Trump's announcement, meanwhile, came as little surprise to investors, as the former president had telegraphed the possibility he might run again for some time. DIVIDED WE HURTUnlike during Trump's previous bid, the discord within the Republican party also worried some investors. The Republican president has claimed credit for the rise, tweeting often about Wall Street's performance. Both stocks rallied earlier this month on reports Trump was considering a third bid for the White House.
Investors have called for Lula to restore firm rules for public spending after major outlays by outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro through the pandemic and election campaign. Instead, Lula is pushing to dismantle old budget rules to ramp up social spending. Senator Simone Tebet, of the centrist Brazilian Democratic Movement party (MDB), said the economy minister should be his first cabinet pick to make clear what his policies are going to be affecting the economy. "An economy minister is needed to explain the president's political thought," she told reporters. The rout made clear that many investors want to see more clarity over ministerial appointments and how Lula aims to stabilize Brazil's public finances.
Lula insisted in a speech that he would maintain fiscal discipline, but his comments added to growing investor skepticism that he would keep a lid on spending. Concerns have been mounting about Brazil's public finances after major outlays through the pandemic and this year's presidential election. But his advisers are already discussing with lawmakers how to open room for more spending outside a constitutional spending cap in order to deliver on campaign promises, including a possible "Transition PEC" amending the constitution. "The signals indicate that the spirit of the Transition PEC is very oriented around new public spending. Still, as tough policy tradeoffs loom, and with Lula's economic team still being defined, markets have grown less patient.
